Mastercard and Visa Worldwide through 3rd Quarter 2020

Mastercard and Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards in circulation worldwide generated $9.855 trillion in purchase volume for the first nine months of 2020, a decline of 0.3% versus the first nine months of 2019. Purchase volume on cards issued outside the U.S. accounted for 56.33% of the Mastercard and Visa worldwide total, a decline from 57.26% in 2019.

Purchase volume on credit cards declined by 9.2% to $5.171 trillion, with 61.15% from cards issued outside the U.S., a slight decline from 61.39%. Purchase volume on debit cards, which includes prepaid, increased 12.0% to $4.684 trillion. Of that amount, 51.01% was tied to cards issued outside the U.S., down from 51.64%. 

Visa purchase volume on cards issued outside the U.S. equaled 52.91% of Visa purchase volume globally, a drop from 54.11% the prior year. Cards issued outside the U.S. accounted for 61.33% of Visa purchase transactions worldwide, an increase from 60.11%.

Cards issued outside the U.S. generated 62.77% of Mastercard worldwide purchase volume, down from 63.25%. Purchase transactions generated by cards issued outside the U.S. accounted for 73.05% of Mastercard purchase transactions globally, up from 71.81%.

Mastercard credit card purchase volume worldwide was $1.987 trillion, down 7.7%. Of that amount, $1.381 trillion was generated by cards issued outside the U.S., a decline of 7.2%. Purchase volume from Mastercard credit cards issued in the U.S. at $605.21 billion fell 9.0%. Worldwide debit card purchase volume for Mastercard reached $1.435 trillion, up 14.4%. 

The $766.47 billion from cards issued outside the U.S. was up 14.8%. Purchase volume on Mastercard debit cards issued in the U.S. reached $668.44 billion, an increase of 13.9%.

Purchase transactions on Mastercard credit cards worldwide totaled 35.06 billion, down 2.1%. The 28.14 billion transactions tied to cards issued outside the U.S. slipped 0.6%. Credit card purchase transactions on Mastercard cards issued in the U.S. totaled 6.92 billion, down 7.7%. Mastercard debit card purchase transactions at 46.98 billion increased 9.3%. The 31.79 billion transactions tied to cards issued outside the U.S. grew 12.5%. Mastercard U.S. debit card purchase transactions totaled 15.20 billion, up 3.3%.

Global Visa credit card purchase volume at $3.184 trillion fell 10.2%. The $1.781 trillion from cards issued outside the U.S. fell 11.4%. Credit card purchase volume from Visa cards issued in the U.S. at $1.403 trillion dropped 8.6%. Visa debit card purchase volume worldwide reached $3.249 trillion, up 11.0%. The $1.623 trillion tied to cards issued outside the U.S. grew 8.8%. Debit card purchase volume for Visa cards issued in the U.S. at $1.626 trillion grew 13.3%.

Purchase transactions on Visa credit cards worldwide totaled 47.55 billion, down 6.2%. The 30.84 billion transactions from cards issued outside the U.S. declined 3.5%. Visa credit card purchase transactions on cards issued in the U.S. at 16.71 billion were down 10.6%. Purchase transactions for Visa debit cards globally at 88.48 billion grew 3.4%. The 52.59 billion transactions on cards issued outside the U.S. were up 5.3%. Visa U.S. debit card purchase transactions totaled 35.89 billion, up 0.6%.
