The table below lists 79 investments (seed, venture, corporate, private equity and IPO) in 22 countries in the merchant acquiring and processing sector of the payment card industry in 2020. Those transactions were first identified in 12 tables published monthly over the last year in prior issues of the Nilson Report. Those issues are cited below.
In addition to the investment deals shown here, the merchant acquiring and processing sector had 91 merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions last year, which were also identified in the 12 issues previously mentioned. We aggregated those M&A deals in merchant processing and acquiring in 2020 in tables published in issue 1189.
When combined, the value of all investment transactions for which the monetary value was announced was $3.97 billion in 2020. North America led with 30 transactions and $2.68 billion in combined value. Europe was the second largest region with 21 transactions valued at $545.1 million. Asia-Pacific’s 18 transactions made it the third largest region by the number of transactions. Total investments were valued at $345.8 million.
The Middle East and Africa region and Latin America both had 5 deals. Latin America’s transactions were valued at $370.6 million, making it the third largest region by that measure. Deals in the Middle East and Africa were valued at $29 million.
