Credit, debit and prepaid American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa cards issued in Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C) generated $679.95 billion in purchase volume for goods and services in 2020, an increase of 2.4% over 2019. Those global brand general purpose cards generated 26.59 billion purchase transactions, down 1.1%. The combination of Mastercard and Visa purchase transactions at 26.01 billion accounted for 97.8% of the LA&C total.

American Express and Diners Club cards accounted for the other 2.2% or 0.58 billion purchase transactions.

Cards in circulation carrying the American Express, Diners Club, Visa and Mastercard brands reached 767.0 million at the end of 2020, up 7.7%.

The market share for Visa card purchase transactions was 55.8%, up 3 basis points from 2019. The market share for Mastercard was 42.0%, an increase of 39 basis points. American Express accounted for 1.9% of purchase transactions, down 36 basis points from 2019. Diners Club’s share dropped 6 basis points to 0.3%.

Market share for American Express dropped 99 basis points to 6.2%. Diners Club’s share dropped 3 basis points to 0.9%.

The year-over-year (YOY) change in purchase volume market share for 2020 is based on 2019’s reported purchase volume. The YOY figure was not adjusted to accommodate local currency percent change.

Some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean experience significant year-over-year inflation rate changes and sometimes currency devaluation. In addition, some countries in LA&C are mostly Visa issuers and others are mostly Mastercard issuers. This also affects the local percent change when figures are reported for the region.

Total volume, which is purchase volume combined with cash advanced against lines of credit or withdrawn from funds on deposit, was $1.246 trillion last year, down 1.5%.

Cash volume of $565.89 billion in 2020 for debit and credit cards combined was equal to 45.42% of total volume. This was down from 47.50% in 2019.

For Visa, cash accounted for 53.28% of its total volume in 2020 from cards issued in the region, a drop from 55.80% in 2019. For Mastercard, cash accounted for 33.96% of its total volume, down from 37.30%.
