Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro, Diners Club and general purpose domestic-market-only consumer, small business and commercial credit, debit and prepaid cards tied to the 50 largest issuers in Europe are ranked on pages 6 and 7. As of December 31, 2020, the top 50, which operated from 30 countries, combined issued 862.0 million payment cards that generated $2.947 trillion in purchase volume (spending for goods and services).

Mastercard and Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards reached 723.7 million and accounted for 83.9% of all cards issued by the top 50. They generated $2.670 trillion in purchase volume, which was 90.6% of the total for all cards.

Russia-based Sberbank continued rapid growth in 2020 in global brand credit and debit cards as well as in Mir domestic-market-only debit cards. Purchase volume was up 49.6% on a local currency basis over 2019. The bank’s combined credit and debit card purchase volume has grown 214.7% on a local currency basis since 2015.

Three issuers—Credit Suisse in Switzerland, Co-operative Bank in the United Kingdom and Piraeus Bank in Greece—moved into the top 50. Airplus International in Germany and Optal Financial in the United Kingdom dropped out of the top 50 due to a sharp decline in card spending for travel in 2020. Optal was acquired by Wex in mid-December 2020.

A table on page 7 shows Europe’s 50 largest debit card (including prepaid) issuers. Combined, that group issued 577.0 million cards as of year-end 2020. Purchase volume totaled $2.112 trillion. New to the top 50 debit card ranking was Banca Transilvania in Romania and BPCE in France.

Two banks based in Italy rose in rankings on the debit card table based on increased purchase volume. Nexi Payments (CartaSi) climbed to 11th from 19th and Intesa Sanpaolo moved to 17th from 20th. Four Russia-based banks rose in the debit card rankings. Sberbank moved up to 1st from 2nd largest, VTB rose to 22nd from 23rd, Tinkoff Bank climbed to 27th from 36th and Russian Standard Bank moved to 37th from 40th.

The other table on page 7 features the 50 largest credit card issuers. That group combined issued 309.9 million credit cards as of year-end 2020. Credit cards issued by the 50 largest generated $977.47 billion in purchase volume.
