Credit, debit, and prepaid American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard, and Visa cards issued in Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C) generated $735.86 billion in purchase volume for goods and services in 2018, an increase of 17.2% over 2017. Those global brand general purpose cards generated 22.83 billion purchase transactions, up 12.8%. The combination of Mastercard and Visa purchase transactions at 22.18 billion accounted for 97.16% of the LA&C total.

American Express and Diners Club cards accounted for the other 2.84% or 0.58 billion purchase transactions.

American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard, and Visa cards in circulation reached 663.7 million at the end of 2018, up 1.6%.

The market share for Visa card purchase transactions was 57.40%, a decline of 235 basis points from 2017. The market share of Mastercard was 39.76%, an increase of 236 basis points. American Express accounted for 2.44% of purchase transactions, unchanged from 2017. Diners Club’s share dropped 1 basis point to 0.40%.

Purchase volume market share for Visa at 56.05% was a decline of 175 basis points from 2017. Mastercard’s purchase volume market share increased 169 basis points to 35.61%. American Express’s share slid 1 basis point to 7.26%. Diners Club’s share grew 6 basis points to 1.08%.

The year-over-year (YOY) change in purchase volume market share for 2018 is based on 2017’s reported purchase volume. The YOY figure was not adjusted to accommodate local currency percent change. Some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean experience significant year-over-year inflation rate changes and sometimes currency devaluation. In addition, some countries in LA&C are mostly Visa issuers and others are mostly Mastercard issuers. This also affects the local percent change when figures are reported for the region.

Total volume, which is purchase volume combined with cash advanced against lines of credit or withdrawn from funds on deposit, reached $1.454 trillion last year, up 10.2%.

Debit and credit card combined cash volume of $718.04 billion in 2018 was equal to 49.39% of total volume in LA&C. This compared to 52.38% in 2017. At Visa, cash accounted for 57.75% of total volume in 2018, a drop from 60.56% in 2017. At Mastercard, cash accounted for 36.40% of total volume, a drop from 38.99%.
