Purchase volume worldwide on Visa and Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards for the first nine months of 2018 reached $9.377 trillion, an increase of 12.3% over the first nine months of 2017. Cards issued outside the U.S. generated 59.01% of Mastercard and Visa global purchase volume, up from 58.44% in 2017.

Purchase volume on credit cards reached $5.549 trillion, an increase of 11.0%, with 63.46% from cards issued outside the U.S., up from 63.13%. Purchase volume on debit cards, which includes prepaid, reached $3.827 trillion, up 14.2%, with 52.57% from cards issued outside the U.S., up from 51.43%. 

Purchase volume on Visa cards issued outside the U.S. accounted for 56.10% of Visa global purchase volume, up from 56.01% the prior year. Cards issued outside the U.S. generated 58.33% of Visa global purchase transactions total, up from 57.25%.

Cards issued outside the U.S. generated 64.66% of Mastercard global purchase volume, up from 63.31%. Purchase transactions on cards issued outside the U.S. generated 69.25% of Mastercard global total, up from 66.63%.

Purchase volume on Mastercard credit cards reached $2.080 trillion, an increase of 11.8%, with $1.488 trillion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 13.1%. Mastercard credit card purchase volume in the U.S. at $591.67 billion, grew 8.7%. Debit card purchase volume for Mastercard reached $1.111 trillion, up 21.3%, with $574.98 from cards issued outside the U.S., up 30.1%. Purchase volume on U.S. debit cards at $536.02 billion, grew 13.1%.

Mastercard credit card purchase transactions worldwide totaled 30.54 billion, up 13.6%, with 23.95 billion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 15.3%. U.S. credit card purchase transactions totaled 6.59 billion, up 7.7%. Debit card purchase transactions totaled 34.97 billion, up 24.4%, with 21.41 billion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 34.9%. U.S. debit card purchases totaled 13.56 billion, up 10.8%.

Visa credit card purchase volume reached $3.469 trillion, an increase of 10.6%, with $2.033 trillion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 10.5%. Credit card purchase volume in the U.S. was $1.436 trillion, up 10.6%. Visa debit card purchase volume totaled $2.716 trillion, up 11.5%, with $1.437 trillion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 12.1%. U.S. debit card purchase volume was $1.279 trillion, up 10.9%.

Visa credit card purchase transactions totaled 46.19 billion, up 7.9%, with 28.63 billion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 7.3%. U.S. credit card purchase transactions totaled 17.55 billion, up 8.9%. Visa debit card purchase transactions totaled 74.99 billion, up 13.1%, with 42.05 billion from cards issued outside the U.S., up 17.5%. U.S. debit card purchase transactions totaled 32.93 billion, up 8.0%.
