Transactions Worldwide — Projected Through 2024

Purchase transactions in the general purpose payment card industry are projected to reach 515.42 billion by 2024. These card-present and card-not-present type payments for goods and services are generated by credit, debit, and prepaid cards with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, UnionPay, Interac (Canada), RuPay, Mir, and PIN-based EFT system (U.S.) brands.
Cards issued in the U.S. generated 41.25% of the global purchase transaction total in 2014. The United States’ market share is projected to fall to 31.69% by 2024, even though the region is projected to see transactions grow by 7.58 billion annually to reach 163.36 billion in 2024.
Cards issued in Europe generated 23.34% of the global total in 2014. Europe’s share is projected to fall to 22.14% of the world total by 2024, even though the region is projected to gain 6.46 billion transactions annually to reach 114.13 billion.
Asia–Pacific’s 22.16% share in 2014 is projected to reach 35.24% of the global total by 2024. Purchase transactions totaled 47.06 billion in 2014, behind both Europe and the United States, but are projected to reach 181.61 billion in 2024, an increase of 13.45 billion annually. Asia-Pacific will surpass Europe and the United States to become the largest region. Transaction growth will be led by UnionPay and RuPay.
Latin America’s 7.35% share in 2014 is projected to fall to 5.87% in 2024. Purchase transactions are projected to reach 30.28 billion, an increase of 1.47 billion annually.
Canada’s 4.18% share in 2014 is expected to fall to 2.66% of the global total by 2024 when transactions are projected to reach 13.73 billion, an increase of 0.48 billion annually.
Middle East/Africa’s share of 1.71% at the end of 2014 will grow to 2.39% of the global total by the end of 2024 as transactions are projected to reach 12.31 billion, an increase of 0.87 billion annually.
