Zettle Terminal from PayPal

PayPal has offered Zettle point-of-sale processing software and a card reader device to small merchants in the US since June 2021. Last month, the company expanded its offering to include an all-in-one handheld POS terminal supported by additional value-added services.

Payment Cards in the US Projected — 2021 through 2026

General purpose and private label credit, debit and prepaid cards, consumer and commercial products combined, reached $9.773 trillion in purchase volume for goods and services in 2021, an increase of 22.5% from 2020. Credit card purchase volume of $4.848 trillion (up 25.0%) equaled 49.61% of the total compared with 48.64% in 2020.

Open Banking from Tink

Open banking, a regulatory requirement in the European Union, is gaining traction in other regions of the world. Companies that provide open banking services send and receive payment information or account data to and from banks, usually via APIs.

Nayax Offers Pay with Points

The CoinBridge subsidiary of unattended payments specialist Nayax is the latest entrant to the pay with points market, where digital loyalty and rewards assets can be redeemed outside of the channel in which they were earned. The CoinBridge platform operates behind the scenes to convert any digital asset into a virtual payment card transaction, in-store or online.

Visa Direct Adds Digital Wallets with Thunes

Visa Inc., owner of VisaNet, the largest payment card network in the world based on merchant acceptance locations, has spent several years building Visa Direct, a capability within VisaNet for delivering funds transfers including remittances, payouts to independent contractors and other use cases for consumers and small businesses.

The 150 largest acquirers of general purpose credit, debit and prepaid card payments from merchants worldwide are listed here based on transactions processed in 2021. Total transactions of 416.55 billion processed by this group increased 17.9% from 2020.

Paying with Points at Checkout

Engage People is building a pay with points (PWP) network in the US that links retailers and their payment processors with participating program managers that issue reward points tied to credit cards. Retailers and processors connected to Engage People are Amazon, Fiserv and FreedomPay. Loyalty program managers connected are Bilt Rewards, HSBC and PayPal.

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region’s 36 largest acquirers of UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club/Discover and domestic-market-only brand card payments are ranked here. They handled credit, debit and prepaid card transactions from 39.7 million APAC region merchant outlets in 2021.

POS Terminals Shipped Worldwide — 2021

Point-of-sale terminal shipments worldwide reached 136.0 million in 2021, up 4.3% over 2020. Shipments of these devices by manufacturer and region are presented on pages 6 and 7. POS terminals counted include countertop, multilane, tablet and handheld devices with integrated chip and/or magnetic stripe card readers, unattended devices, terminals that can read QR codes and also accept cards and those that can read a biometric identifier and then facilitate a payment.
