Consumer and commercial credit, debit and prepaid cards issued in Canada with Visa, Mastercard, Interac and American Express brands generated 12.41 billion purchase transactions in 2020, a decline of 6.2%. Purchase volume was $621.31 billion, which dropped 4.0% on a local currency basis. However, cards in circulation grew 4.2% to 196.6 million. Visa’s market share of purchase volume declined to 41.8% from 42.6%. Interac’s share increased to 28.9% from 27.8%.
