Mastercard Enhances Contactless Card Payments

Enhanced Contactless (Ecos) is the name Mastercard has given to new specifications that POS terminal and other device manufacturers and card manufacturers will build into their products to facilitate contactless payments. Security in the Ecos standard involves utilization of two new algorithms. Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) public-key cryptography will be deployed to replace the RSA public/private key cryptography currently used. ECC uses a smaller key size than RSA, making it better suited for the desired less than 400 millisecond approval/decline timeframe for contactless card payment...
