Merchant Processing Fees in the United States—2023

Credit, debit and prepaid general purpose and private label cards issued in the United States generated $11.240 trillion in purchase volume in 2023, up 6.2% from 2022. To accept those payments, US merchants paid $172.05 billion in processing fees for goods and services they sold. This was a 7.1% increase from $160.66 billion in 2022. General purpose credit cards (American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa) combined with private label credit cards (store, gasoline, medical and other types) reached $6.142 trillion in purchase volume in 2023, up 6.7%.
