In 2016 manufacturers worldwide shipped 54.2 million payment card authorization terminals with integrated chip and/or magnetic-stripe card readers, an increase of 10.5 million units from 2015. The 54.2 million figure included countertop, multilane, and handheld terminals as well as PCI DSS-approved chip & PIN devices and approved chip & signature devices that communicate using Bluetooth or a USB connection to a terminal.
