General purpose credit and debit cards issued in the U.S. generated $3.800 trillion in purchase volume of goods and services for the first nine months of 2016, up 7.7% over the first nine months of 2015. Purchase volume on credit cards of $2.244 trillion grew by 7.9% and accounted for 59.04% of all spending. Debit card purchase volume of $1.557 trillion grew by 7.5% and accounted for 40.96% of all spending. Debit card figures include prepaid cards.
