US General Purpose Card Brands through 3Q 2023

Credit, debit and prepaid cards issued in the United States carrying the Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover brands generated $7.547 trillion in purchase volume for goods and services from January 1 through September 30, 2023, up 6.9% compared to the first nine months of 2022. Credit card purchase volume was $4.310 trillion, up 7.4%. Purchase volume generated by credit cards accounted for 57.10% of combined credit and debit card purchase volume, up from 56.84% for the same period of 2022.
