Last year, 12.10 billion chip cards were shipped worldwide, an increase of 4.7% over 2015. Payment cards with chips numbered 3.60 billion, an increase of 5.0%. Other uses for chip cards included those with SIMs for mobile handsets, transportation and ticketing, private label prepaid, telecom, and nonpayment applications. Among all manufacturers selling payment cards with chips, Gemalto was the largest with a 26.49% market share, down from 27.26% in 2015.
