First Quarter Card Results in the U.S. — 2020

Consumer, small business, and commercial credit, debit, and prepaid cards carrying Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express brands issued in the U.S. as well as payments settled through Visa Direct and Mastercard Send generated $1.626 trillion in payment volume in the first quarter of 2020 (January 1 through March 31), up 4.9% from the same period in 2019. Credit card purchase volume of $931.72 billion increased 3.1%. Cash volume (from balance transfers, ATMs, over the counter, and paper checks) on credit cards was $30.04 billion, up 5.6%.
