General Purpose Cards—U.S. 2021

Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover brand consumer and commercial credit, debit and prepaid cards issued in the U.S. combined generated $8.461 trillion in purchase volume (spending for goods and services) in 2021. This was up 25.1% versus 2020. Cash advances on credit cards and cash withdrawals on debit and prepaid cards are not included in purchase volume. Purchase volume tied to debit and prepaid Visa cards increased 25.8% to $2.805 trillion. Visa credit card purchase volume grew 24.1% to $2.405 trillion.
