Mastercard and Visa in the U.S. — 2021

Credit, debit and prepaid Mastercard and Visa consumer and commercial cards issued in the U.S. combined generated $7.387 trillion in purchase volume in 2021, an increase of 24.9% from 2020. Purchase volume at Visa increased 25.0% to $5.211 trillion. Mastercard purchase volume increased 24.6% to $2.176 trillion. The market share of purchase volume for all Visa cards combined at 70.54% grew 6 bps from 70.48% in 2020 over all Mastercard cards combined. Mastercard’s share slipped 6 bps to 29.46%.
