Merchant Processing Fees in the United States — 2024

General purpose and private label credit, debit and prepaid cards issued in the US generated $11.903 trillion in purchase volume in 2024. This was an increase of 5.8% from 2023. Credit cards accounted for 54.30% of purchase volume and debit cards 45.70% in 2024. The prior year, credit cards accounted for 54.66% and debit cards 45.34%. Purchase volume on Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover general purpose credit cards combined with store, gasoline, medical and other types of private label credit cards was $6.464 trillion in 2024, an increase of 5.1%.
