In 2015 manufacturers worldwide shipped 43.5 million payment card authorization terminals with integrated chip and/or magnetic-stripe card readers, an increase of 27.1% from 2014. These devices were used as stand-alone terminals or connected to PC-based point-of-sale systems or electronic cash registers (ECRs).
