U.S. Credit Cards Projected — 2016 through 2021

Consumer and commercial general purpose and private label credit cards in circulation in the U.S. at year-end 2016 totaled 1.04 billion, up 2.6% from 2015. Credit cards in circulation are projected to reach 1.22 billion by year-end 2021. Purchase volume of goods and services generated by these credit cards totaled $3.334 trillion in 2016, an increase of 7.5% over 2015. In 2021, credit cards are projected to generate $4.995 trillion in purchase volume.
