Mastercard and Visa were the leaders in purchase volume growth among debit card types in 2016. Both brands increased 6.52% versus 2015. Visa’s market share increased to 51.25% in 2016 from 50.87% in 2015 among general purpose and private label debit cards, while Mastercard’s share increased to 21.65% from 21.49%. Visa and Mastercard debit figures include prepaid cards that carry their brands. Purchase volume on EFT network cards, led by Star, Pulse, Nyce, and Accel, increased 3.0% last year over 2015.
