U.S. General Purpose Card Brands — Midyear 2016

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover credit, debit, and prepaid cards generated 43.88 billion purchase transactions from January 1 through June 30, 2016 — up 4.34 billion or 11.0% over the first six months of 2015. Debit cards accounted for 63.16% of those transactions, down from 63.29%. Credit cards accounted for 36.84%, up from 36.71%.
