U.S. General Purpose Card Brands—Midyear 2019

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover brand credit, debit, and prepaid cards generated 54.23 billion purchase transactions from January 1 through June 30, 2019—an increase of 3.93 billion or up 7.8% versus the first six months of 2018. Mastercard and Visa brand debit cards accounted for 61.09% of combined debit and credit purchase transactions, a drop from 61.17% versus midyear 2018.
