U.S. General Purpose Cards — Midyear 2015

Credit, debit, and prepaid cards carrying American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa brands generated 39.58 billion purchase transactions for goods and services at merchants from January 1 through June 30, 2015 — up 3.12 billion or 8.6% over the first six months of 2014. Debit cards accounted for 63.33%, of all purchase transactions, down from 63.86%. Credit cards accounted for the other 36.67%, up from 36.14%.
