U.S. General Purpose Credit Card Issuers at Midyear

The 12 largest U.S. issuers of Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover general purpose credit cards collectively owned $727.07 billion in outstandings receivables at June 30, 2021, a decline of $8.56 billion or 1.2% from June 30, 2020. Purchase volume on cards issued by the 12 largest collectively amounted to $1.780 trillion in spending for goods and services from January 1 through June 30, 2021, up 21.7%.
