Capital One to Buy Discover

Buying Discover would make Capital One the only full-service commercial bank in the US with ownership of a global merchant network. In the US, that network has about 99% parity with the Visa and Mastercard networks. Capital One will benefit from direct connections to merchants not available to issuers in the Visa and Mastercard systems unless they also acquire transactions from those merchants.

Message from the Publisher

This issue features our ranking of the 50 largest US issuers of Mastercard and Visa credit cards, results of a survey we have published annually for more than 40 years. Figures we publish are received directly from the issuers not from call reports. They include commercial card products, which are not typically included in a company’s published results. Also included here is our coverage of the proposed takeover of Discover by Capital One. Adjusted for inflation, the deal would be the third largest in the history of the payment card industry
