150 Largest Credit Card Portfolios Worldwide—2024

The 150 largest portfolios of outstanding receivables tied to Visa, UnionPay, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, Diners Club and domestic-market-only credit cards as of December 31, 2024, are ranked on page 6. Issuers from the US held a 46.8% market share among owners of the 150 largest portfolios. China-based issuers were second largest with a 32.2% share.

Store Cards in the US — 2024

Purchase volume on private label store credit cards of $198.42 billion in 2024 was down 1.4% from 2023. Outstanding receivables on store cards slipped 2.5% to $127.13 billion.

Merchants Settle with Visa and Mastercard

Visa will pay $119.7 million and Mastercard $79.8 million to settle remaining claims in a class-action lawsuit filed on March 8, 2016, pertaining to fraud liability regulations on card payments processed from POS terminals without chip card readers.

The 100 largest US issuers of Mastercard and Visa credit cards generated $2.182 trillion in purchase volume (spending for goods and services) for the period January 1 through June 30, 2025. This was up 4.4% ($91.70 billion) over the same period in 2024 for the 100 largest issuers.
