Spectra Technologies’ S1 Line

Hong Kong-based Spectra Technologies, the 23rd largest POS terminal manufacturer worldwide, has launched three Android-based devices—the S1, S1 Plus and S1 Self-Service Kit (S1 SSK). All three use similar, phone-type hardware. S1, the base model, is a small handheld device that can be combined with peripherals.

POS Device Manufacturers

PIN pads, dongle-type card readers, other types of card readers, electronic cash registers (ECR) and devices that scan QR codes but do not accept cards were not covered in issue 1228, which featured shipments of POS terminals. 

Zettle Terminal from PayPal

PayPal has offered Zettle point-of-sale processing software and a card reader device to small merchants in the US since June 2021. Last month, the company expanded its offering to include an all-in-one handheld POS terminal supported by additional value-added services.

POS Terminals Shipped Worldwide

Point-of-sale terminal shipments worldwide reached 136.0 million in 2021, up 4.3% over 2020. Shipments of these devices by manufacturer and region are presented on pages 6 and 7. POS terminals counted include countertop, multilane, tablet and handheld devices with integrated chip and/or magnetic stripe card readers, unattended devices, terminals that can read QR codes and also accept cards and those that can read a biometric identifier and then facilitate a payment.

SumUp Books $602 Million in New Financing

Processor SumUp, which handles transactions from four million small merchants in 35 countries, has raised $602 million (€590 million) last month in an approximately 50%-50% combination of debt financing and equity funding. The equity round was SumUp’s first in five years. The company’s valuation was placed at $8.16 billion (€8.00 billion).

Spectra Technologies Tap-POS

Spectra Technologies, a Hong Kong-based payment terminal manufacturer, has launched a low-cost Android-based model called the Tap-POS. The device, which uses phone-type hardware, is primarily intended for contactless payments. It ships without magstripe or contactless chip readers.
