Merchant Processing Fees in the U.S.—2021

Credit, debit and prepaid cards issued in the United States, general purpose and private label type combined, generated $9.443 trillion in purchase volume in 2021, up 23.2% from 2020. U.S. merchants who accepted those cards as payment for goods and services paid $137.83 billion in processing fees, an increase of 24.3% from the prior year. Credit cards with general purpose brands—American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa—as well as private label credit cards—store, gasoline, medical and other types—generated a combined $4.858 trillion in purchase volume, up 21.5% from 2020. ...
