Store Cards in the U.S.—2016

Private label store credit card outstandings were $117.81 billion at year-end 2016, up 9.3% versus 2015. Store card outstandings grew faster than outstandings tied to general purpose cards that operate on the American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa networks. General purpose card outstandings were $860.64 billion at year-end 2016, up 7.5%. Purchase volume on store credit cards increased 8.6% last year to $205.71 billion.
