U.S. General Purpose Cards through 3Q 2017

General purpose credit and debit cards issued in the U.S. generated $4.080 trillion in purchase volume of goods and services for the first nine months of 2017, up 7.3% over the first nine months of 2016. Purchase volume on credit cards of $2.453 trillion grew by 9.4% and accounted for 60.13% of all spending, up from 59.02%. Debit/prepaid card purchase volume of $1.627 trillion grew by 4.4% and accounted for 39.87%, down from 40.98%.
