Credit, debit, and prepaid Visa and Mastercard cards issued in the U.S. generated $4.718 trillion in purchase volume (spending for goods and services) in 2017, an increase of 9.1% over 2016. Consumer and commercial card products are included in that amount. Visa card purchase volume grew 10.5%. Mastercard card purchase volume increased 5.7%. Compared to Mastercard, Visa’s purchase volume market share reached 70.63% for 2017, up from 69.69% in 2016.
