Private equity firm Advent International and online payment processor and infrastructure provider Stripe have made an unsolicited offer to take over online payment processor PayPal. The companies have offered PayPal shareholders about $53 billion. The PayPal board of directors rejected the offer.
The value of PayPal shares, which trade on Nasdaq, have been at an historic low. Before news of the buyout offer became known, PayPal’s market capitalization was in the $42-billion range. The company was valued at $306 billion in July 2021.
