Consumer and commercial credit, debit, and prepaid general purpose cards issued in the United States generated $5.648 trillion in purchase volume at merchants in 2016, up 7.0% over 2015. American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards generated a combined $3.059 trillion, up 8.0%.
