Consumer and commercial credit, debit, and prepaid general purpose cards issued in the United States generated $5.648 trillion in purchase volume at merchants in 2016, up 7.0% over 2015. American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards generated a combined $3.059 trillion, up 8.0%. Debit and prepaid cards with those brands as well as the brands of EFT networks Star, Pulse, Nyce, Interlink, Accel, and others combined to generate $2.589 trillion in purchase volume, up 5.8%.
