U.S. Credit Cards Projected — 2017 through 2022

There were 1.06 billion general purpose and private label consumer and commercial credit cards in circulation in the U.S. at December 31, 2017, an increase of 4.3% from 2016. At the end of 2022, credit cards in circulation are projected to reach 1.20 billion. Credit card purchase volume for goods and services reached $3.597 trillion in 2017, up 8.8% over the prior year. By 2022, credit cards are projected to generate $5.119 trillion in purchase volume, an increase of 42.3%.
