The largest US-based cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase, created an agentic commerce payment and trust protocol last year. Last month, the protocol, x402, was donated to the Linux Foundation, a global nonprofit organization that promotes collaboration on open source software, hardware, standards and data. Coinbase created x402 to be used in the long-dormant 402 Payment Required status code, which was built into HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) web requests more than 25 years ago but never adopted by the card payment industry.
